Hakuba Day 2 : Goryu Resort

Mission: Hakuba 2007
By skijay 22 Feb 2007
Hi snowbunnies!
as I write this, I am having my traditional post snowboarding beer, straight from the vending machine of course. (It's a Suntory beer. For good times, make it.... Suntory times.) We had a fabulous day at Goryu resort, a short bus or taxi ride from our pension in Happo village. Goryu stands for Five dragons. It's not as big as Happo One, but the facilities are much better, as is the snow (although the lower slopes are all manmade snow at the moment, but at least this didn't turn into icy rocks like at Happo One).
You guys will really like this resort. It's fun and there7s something for everyone. For beginners or those who want to practise getting good at their Ss, there are many wide green runs at the bottom of the mountain, and these don't get overly crowded despite the mountain being far more popular than Happo one. Some of the runs are pretty flat while others are a little more challenging but still nice cruisy green runs.
We headed up the top first to do a few red (intermediate) runs up at the summit. The snow was pretty good here, although it was a little hard packed, but it was real snow not manmade slush! I finally got a little of my confidence back after being taken out by that boarder yesterday, so much so that we attempted a steep red run to get to another part of the mountain (The run was blocked off by a sign that said "Experts only" which was a little off putting! But fortunately, though it was steep it was definitely doable and I got my confidence back after making a few turns on it - yeah!!) The run ended in a stupid cat track which I hated but had to endure anyway.

For lunch we had Mos burger which is Japan's answer to McDonalds. The burgers are tiny!

After lunch we played on the lower green slopes, which was heaps of fun. V and James tried lots of jumps, and I hooned down as fast as I could (the sound of wind whipping through your helmet is unbeatable. The snow was manmade slushy snow, which was a little disappointing, but still it was fun to ride, if a lot like Australian conditions. The weather was perfect - another sunny blue sky day. The only thing is that night skiing wasn't included in our lift ticket.

The facilities at Goryu are surprisingly much better than at the main resort, Happo One, for some reason that we can't figure out. The toilets are much fancier and cleaner, and they have Haagen Dazs ice cream shops! There is even a Subway here. We think you guys would really enjoy this little mountain - we certainly did!

Had a ball today, heading off for dinner and maybe an onsen (hot springs)! Will upload some photos tonight.

ps. I'm blogging from what appears to be a free internet terminal at Goryu. How cool is that!!
