Hakuba costs

Mission: Hakuba 2007
By skijay 3 Mar 2007
The following is a guide to the costs you can expect if planning a trip to Hakuba. I've given the approximate AUD amount assuming an exchange rate of 1AUD to 84Y. Please check the current exchange rate.

GETTING TO HAKUBA FROM TOKYO
The following are options that we took to/from Shinjuku.

Direct express train (the Super Azusa) 7870Y/83AUD one way. (3.5 hrs) Gets you to Hakuba town. Shuttle bus to Happo Village 180Y/2.5AUD
Bus (from Happo village) 4700Y/53AUD. (4.5hrs)

Options from Tokyo station: (I'm not sure if the shinkansen stops in Shinjuku as well - it might do)
Shinkansen to Nagano about 7800Y/83AUD, followed by bus to Happo village 1400Y/14AUD.

ACCOMODATION
Staying in a pension (bed and breakfast) in a double room with private bathroom, and breakfast included, was about 4460Y/53AUD per person per night. You can cut these costs further with a shared bathroom and more people in a room (it might get a bit squeezy though). Check out www.hakubahotels.com.

FOOD AND DRINK
Lunch on mountain (eg bowl of ramen, katsudon, katsu curry etc) 850-1100Y (from AUD10).
Beer, normal can, from vending machine - 350Y/AUD4
Beer, large can (500ml), from vending machine - 500Y/AUD6
Beer, normal can, from convenience store - 250Y/AUD3
Soft drink from vending machine - 120-150Y/about AUD1.50-2.
Beer in a restaurant - about 400-600Y.
Can chu hi from convenience store - 140-160Y (AUD2).
Can chu hi from vending machine - 200Y (AUD2.30)

Dinner varies according to what you want to eat.
Cheapest options are soba noodles which cost about the same as ramen (ie about AUD10-12).
izakayas cost about AUD20 or 30 per person for food only. Each small dish averages 400-600Y in price.

LIFT PASSES
Average 4500Y (AUD53) for a single day pass.

Happo One discounted single day pass (available from your pension) 4100Y
Happo One discounted 2 day pass weekdays only 7000Y
Happo One discounted 2 day pass weekends 7800Y
Happy 7 two day lift pass (valid at any of the seven resorts at Hakuba, but must be used on consecutive days) 7700Y
Goryu/Hakuba 47 3 day pass (does not have to be consecutive days) is excellent value at 11000Y. Note that a lift pass bought at Goryu is valid also at Hakuba 47 as they are essentially the same mountain.

OTHER COSTS
Courier - snowboard/ski bag or large package - between 1600Y and 1900Y one way (AUD22).
