Hamaya Inn
By
skijay 13 Feb 2009Bec recommended this place and it is AWESOME. Firstly, Nozawa Onsen is a fabulous little ski village in itself, but more on that later. They dont speak much English at Hamaya but they have a great sense of humour and our attempts to converse always draw raucous laughter (and eventually, wakarimas... or understanding!)
We hava tatami rooms with those wonderful kodatsus (tables with a heater under a blanket...mmmm) and in the evening they roll out the futons and big thick quilts. It doesnt have a resident cat but a resident pug called Yume (meaning Famous) who is very very old and sleeps in the basement next to the heater. Yume is adorable but he/she has a habit of farting on Damien, har har har.
At 6pm we were summoned to dinner by an announcement over the PA (?!) and were served a 7 course feast which really took all our effort to finish. There was soba, cabbage roll soup, grilled daikon, pickled daikon, katsu cutlet, beef sashimi, and a belly pork and tofu hot pot. OMG I almost needed to be carried out of there!
Currently we are waxing boards (or rather the boys are he he) and contemplating visiting one of the 13 free onsens in town. Time for a very deep sleep after that and first day on the mountain tomorrow!
