A Perfect Day
By skijay 16 Feb 2009Woke up to the sight of falling snow, which was a sight for sore eyes after riding ice and slush yesterday in summery conditions. Another humungous breakfast at Hamaya Inn, complete with glass of milk, fried egg, grilled mackerel, mushrooms, miso soup, and more pickles. They really love pickles here (more on that later). Otoosan (owner of Hamaya Inn) took us to the slopes again in his van (Living at Hamaya Inn is kind of like staying at home - food and drink provided, no dishes to wash, and your parents drop you off everywhere). Made it to the gondola at 8:30 - first lift - and half of the Japanese skiiers/snowboarders had gone home after the weekend, so the queue was about a third of the length.
Big fat snowflakes kept falling thick and fast all day - but the visibility was perfect and there was hardly any wind. Uenotaira, the green run that I spent most of my time on yesterday, was covered with 2cm of fresh snow first thing in the morning, and about 7cm in the evening. What a difference it made gliding over fresh powder as opposed to riding what seemed like corrugated iron yesterday.
Up to the top of the mountain, and rode the Yamabiko runs until I ran out of steam at 2:30pm. powder to be had everywhere, no people, beautiful rolling runs, and even a WC halfway down the run in case you need a halfway pitstop. Hooded gondolas kept us warm - the temperature dropped gradually in the afternoon and clouds and wind moved in at 3pm.
After a hot chocolate, Michele and I rode the gondola down and walked home in the snow, stopping for a steamed pickle bun (it tastes much nicer than it sounds!!) At home now, awaiting another 7 course meal, and just about to have a hot shower and sit in the ofuro followed by a Grapefruit Chu Hi.
Snowboarding days really don't come better than this!!!!
